Critique of the New Dutch Euthanasia Powder
According to a Dutch Euthanasia group, a fast and painless death is all but guaranteed with a ‘new pill of Drion’ in the form of powder. But is it?
The means of euthanasia currently being advocated by a relatively new organization have been criticized for the terrible side effects it can cause.
Boudewijn Chabot is highly critical of the powder cited this month by the Dutch group, the ‘Co-operative Last Will’. Chabot is a psychiatrist and co-author of the book ‘Uitweg’, which examines a methods for self-euthanasia.
The Co-operative was established in 2013 and has the aim of finding a substance that allows members to die without the intervention of a doctor or other professional.
On September 1, the organization announced on the Dutch TV program, ‘Nieuwsuur’, that their organization had been successful locating a new ‘pill’.
The substance was said to be a preservative that is freely available in the Netherlands and of which a small amount would cause a rapid and painless death.
The Co-operative said it would only give the name of the substance to its members, and only after a person was a member for six months. In recent days, the number of members has reportedly almost tripled, up to about eight thousand.
Side Effects
According to Chabot, the Co-operative cannot guarantee the claim of a rapid, painless death. Based on the information that the organization has stated publicly, the substance can only be one of two powders.
“Both agents block the same enzyme and have the same symptoms after ingestion: nausea, dizziness, headache, muscle weakness and an epileptic accident can precede death. For those who want to die with dignity, it is horrible to experience that. For the family it is horrible to see.”
The findings of Chabot are shared by Dr Philip Nitschke of Exit International, an organization researching methods of a peaceful and reliable death worldwide.
Nitschke was informed by the Co-operative six months ago of their plans.
According to the physician, the organization discussed with him the two substances on their shortlist, the powders about which Chabot is warning. Which of the two the Co-operative has eventually chosen, Nitschke does not know.
According to Nitschke, both resources are currently being used for other purposes.
“One powder has until recently been used in car airbags. However, because of its explosiveness and concerns of global terrorism, it is now difficult to obtain.
The other drug is currently being used in Australia to eliminate wild pigs. Both substances possess the side effects mentioned by Chabot may occur.”
Nitschke has included the powders with all their pros and cons this weekend in the revised version of his standard work ‘The Peaceful Pill Handbook‘, which discusses methods of self-euthanasia.
Headache
The Co-operative Last Will does not acknowledge the listed side effects stated by Chabot. “Our drug does not cause epileptic attacks,” says board member Jos van Wijk.
“As we said on Nieuwsuur, it causes a headache. Therefore, we recommend taking an anti-headache medication and rest.”
Nitschke agrees with Chabot that a sleeping pill and anti-headache medication are not enough.
“To ensure that these side effects do not occur, further research is required. We think that a better combination of drugs can be developed, but more time for research is needed.
It is a pity that the Co-operative did not want to take more time before seeking publicity. ”

Een snelle en pijnloze dood is allesbehalve gegarandeerd met de ‘nieuwe pil van Drion’ in de vorm van poeder.
Een middel dat een relatief nieuwe organisatie haar leden wil adviseren om hun leven op een humane manier te kunnen beëindigen, kan zorgen voor afschuwelijke laatste momenten.
Dat zegt Boudewijn Chabot over het poeder waarmee de Coöperatie Laatste Wil deze maand naar buiten trad. Chabot is psychiater en co-auteur van het boek ‘Uitweg’, waarin hij andere manieren voor een menswaardige dood bespreekt.
De Coöperatie is in 2013 opgericht en heeft zich ten doel gesteld een substantie te vinden waarmee leden zich zonder tussenkomst van een arts of hulpverlener het leven kunnen ontnemen. Op 1 september maakte de organisatie in ‘Nieuwsuur’ bekend in hun opzet geslaagd te zijn. Het zou gaan om een conserveermiddel dat in Nederland vrij verkrijgbaar is en waarvan een kleine hoeveelheid zorgt voor een snelle en pijnloze dood.
De coöperatie wil de naam alleen aan leden prijsgeven, en pas nadat zij een half jaar lid zijn. De afgelopen dagen is het aantal leden bijna verdrievoudigd, tot zo’n achtduizend.
Bijwerkingen
Volgens Chabot kan de Coöperatie de claim van een snelle pijnloze dood niet waarmaken. Afgaande op de informatie die de organisatie naar buiten heeft gebracht, kan het volgens hem maar om twee, vergelijkbare poeders gaan. “Beide middelen blokkeren hetzelfde enzym waardoor ze na innemen vrijwel dezelfde symptomen geven: misselijkheid, duizeligheid, hoofdpijn, spierzwakte en een epileptische toeval kunnen voorafgaan aan het overlijden. Voor wie menswaardig wil sterven is het afschuwelijk dat te moeten ervaren. Voor de familie is het afschuwelijk om aan te zien.”
De bevindingen van Chabot worden gedeeld door arts Philip Nitschke van Exit International, een organisatie die wereldwijd onderzoek doet naar dit soort middelen.
Nitschke is zes maanden geleden door de Coöperatie geïnformeerd. Volgens de arts had de organisatie toen nog twee middelen op hun shortlist staan, de poeders waarvoor Chabot waarschuwt.
Welke van de twee de Coöperatie uiteindelijk gekozen heeft, is Nitschke niet bekend.
Beide middelen worden volgens hem op dit moment voor andere doeleinden gebruikt. “Het ene poeder werd tot voor kort gebruikt in airbags. Omdat het vanwege de explosiviteit onder het vergrootglas ligt van de inlichtingendiensten, is het moeilijk verkrijgbaar. Het andere middel wordt op dit moment in Australië ingezet om wilde varkens te ruimen. Voor beide geldt dat de door Chabot genoemde bijwerkingen kunnen optreden.”
Nitschke heeft de poeders met al hun voors en tegens dit weekend opgenomen in de herziene versie van zijn standaardwerk ‘The Peaceful Pill’, waarin hij zelfeuthanasie bespreekt.
De Coöperatie Laatste Wil herkent zich niet in de genoemde bijwerkingen. “Ons middel zorgt niet voor epileptische aanvallen”, zegt bestuurslid Jos van Wijk. “Zoals we in Nieuwsuur aangaven zorgt het wel voor hoofdpijn. Daarom adviseren wij om een anti-hoofdpijnmiddel in te nemen en een slaapmiddel voor de rust.”
Nitschke is het met Chabot eens dat een slaappil en een anti-hoofdpijnmiddel niet genoeg zijn. “Om zeker te zijn dat deze bijwerkingen niet optreden, is iets van meer gewicht nodig. Wij denken dat er een goede combinatie van pillen gevonden kan worden, maar daar is wel meer tijd voor nodig. Het is spijtig dat de Coöperatie deze tijd niet heeft willen nemen.”
