Victoria Gets New Euthanasia Law

A quarter of a Century later, and the State of Victoria has finally enacted a voluntary euthanasia law.

Touted as the world's 'most conservative law' for the terminally ill, the new Voluntary Assisted Dying Act of Victoria is expected to help around 150 people a year.

So what makes the Victoria law 'conservative'?

Answer: Its 68+ 'safeguards'

If you have the energy to fulfill the safeguards when you are so sick that death is your preferable option, then the Victorian law is for you.

But what if you don't? What if you are at the end of your tether?

And how do you feel about the fact that a public servant (the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services) is the ultimate arbiter of whether you get help to die or not? And that this person has every right, and indeed a legal obligation to say no if they disapprove of your application for your VAD 'permit'?

To ensure that the Victorian law is understood in all its glory (and drawbacks), Exit has  undertaken a full analysis of the law to identify everything, that every Victorian needs to be aware of.

Fast Company

•  Fast Company Profiles Sarco •

In what must be a first for the global euthanasia movement, this month the tech business magazine, Fast Company, has published an important profile piece on Sarco.

With an editorial focus on 'innovation in technology, leadership, world changing ideas, creativity, and design',  Fast Company says it seeks to 'inspire readers to think expansively, lead with purpose, embrace change, and shape the future of business'.

The article 'The world's leading euthanasia advocate designs a "death pod"' by Portland (OR) tech writer, John Pavlus, is here.

• Aussie 'Nitrite-Combo' Workshop Tour 2019 •

As more becomes known about the experience of dying peacefully and reliably with some of the inorganic salts, in particular sodium nitrite, so Exit's R&D in this area is examining new approaches to potentiate this promising method.

This topic is particularly relevant as the Victorian government has launched the world's most conservative medicalised end of life legislation. IF you satisfy the 68+ onerous pre-requisites, and satisfy a panel of doctors (and the head of the Victorian Dept of Health) you MIGHT just be given lethal drugs. and even these will be second best - the Victorian government gave up on trying to access the universally acknowledged best end of life drug, Nembutal, settling instead for a second best (but much cheaper!) combo alternative.

Are you feeling lucky? (as Clint Eastwood, AKA Dirty Harry) would say,  then take you chances with the Victorian law (or the mirror images that will soon appear in other Australian states), but for those seeking FULL control, where YOU call the shots, come to the 'Nitrite Combo' workshop in your State.

This R&D will be the primary theme of Exit's forthcoming Australian workshop tour, after which time the information will be published in The Peaceful Pill eHandbook.

•  Correction to Derek Humphry's Chronology  •

This week the 'Godfather' of the Assisted Suicide movement, Derek Humphry, made an unfortunate, but significant, omission in his chronology of the history of Assisted Suicide laws up to and including June 2019.

Read more at the revived Exit Blog.

Exit's previous Blog article featured the story of misinformation about the death on of 17-year old Dutch teenager, Noa Pothoven. Noa did not receive help to die (despite press reports), she refused food and fluids.

The story about the story is the story.
