Exit 20th Anniversary ROTI Conference: 22-23 September 2016

On 22 – 23 September at the State Library of Victoria, Exit International held a brilliant 20th anniversary conference.

The conference  marked the 20th anniversary of the death of Darwin man Bob Dent.

On this day in 1996, Bob, suffering from prostate cancer, was the first person in the world to receive a legal, lethal, voluntary injection.

This was performed under the Northern Territory’s Rights of the Terminally Ill Act (ROTI).

This injection was provided by Exit International founder, Dr Philip Nitschke.

The Deliverance Machine computer system made the injection possible.

This Act lasted 9 months before being overturned by conscience vote in the Australian Parliament by the Kevin Andrews Act (Euthanasia Laws Act).

This year’s conference looks back and celebrates this historic milestone.

The photo gallery from the conference is coming soon. Great fun all round.

Most importantly progressive debate on a challenging issue.

Is dying well – rational suicide – voluntary euthanasia a civil right or a medical treatment.

Papers coming soon so you can decide …
